The Design of this Superb power wheel

One of the things we love about the Fisher-Price Power Wheels Dune Racer is just how good it looks. Every detail on it looks and feels 'serious' and powerful (especially from a child's perspective). But that is not all. The design definitely makes us believe it can handle rough terrain and offer hours of off-road fun for your kid.

The bumpers, rims and the shifter all pop out visually thanks to the "chrome". This really complements the vibrant color of the racer. We would also like to mention that the interior is all about safety. There are no sharp edges and everything is very smooth.

Another thing we would like to mention is that it rides really low. This has both a good and a bad side. The good side is that it is more stable and safe that way. After all, it is almost impossible to flip over. But, the bad side is that you will have to bear in mind that it might fly under the radar for some.

By that, we mean that it could literally be below the field of vision and hard to keep track of. Especially if they go over the hill.

It even has decent storage space under the hood. This will not only play more into the fantasy of driving a dune racer, but it will also be useful. You can bring your kid's favorite toys or some necessities.

What we would also like to mention is that it is bigger than many would expect. After all, you can comfortably sit two seven-year-old kids in this thing. Which is also the age the manufacturer recommends. Well, to be exact, the recommendation is for kids from 36 months to the age of 7.

The Learning Experience

It even comes with seatbelts. Of course, they are not really a requirement for a 2.5mph vehicle. But they will help you teach your kid to always buckle up before going anywhere.

Another thing some people tend to forget when it comes to these toys is that they are teaching tools. With a toy like this one, you can get your kid behind the steering wheel early. This will help them a lot in the future when they will have to learn to drive real cars.

6 Main Features of the power wheels dune racer

While still being a toy, this is actually a really serious vehicle for a kid. There are a lot of various features we have to mention. So we will definitely be dividing this review into a lot of smaller portions.

Let's start.

1) The Build Quality

One thing that you should definitely turn your primary focus to is the quality of this kid's vehicle. After all, even if it is not too expensive for what it is, an electric car is an expensive toy. Which means that you will want it to last for at least a couple years. And this Power Wheels Dune Racer definitely does not disappoint.

While they certainly know they are making toys, they are taking them very seriously. The Dune Racer has a very strong steel frame for safety, and longevity. The tubing is metal and it even sports "chrome" details. In fact, while testing it, we had a fully-grown man give it a spin and it went just fine.

2) The Warranty

Well, before we leave the talk about the quality of the electric car, we must mention the warranty. After all, a decent warranty will help you retain your peace of mind. And this product has it. In essence, you will have coverage for one year from bumper to bumper.

Another thing that is not an issue if you choose this racer is the service center location. They have well over 300 locations where you can get service you require. So, usually, you will be able to find a service center nearby.

3) Off Road Fun

One thing a dune racer must be able to do is handle difficult terrain. And, while this is a kids version, it drives quite nicely. If you really want to let your child have fun, you must be ready for the fact that they will leave the smoothness of the road almost instantly, especially while they are still learning.

And you don't want to be buying a new toy every time they go off-road. As you can imagine, if they find a hill, they will try to go over it. So, how good is the Dune Racer when it comes to that?

The first thing we would like to mention is that it has a powerful battery for what it is. The usual standard is 6 volts, while the Dune Racer has 12. And the ruggedness of the tires, along with the Monster Traction sure helps a lot.

With the Monster Traction system and directional threads in the tires, this racer can easily drive around your backyard. But, it can also do a lot more.

The Dune Racer's tires seem to be perfect for rough terrain. The large, rugged-looking tires will let your kid drive wherever it wants. So, which terrains can it navigate through? Every terrain you would expect it to, and more. It did not skid around in the grass or stop from overgrown patches. It also went through gravel and mud with excellent results.

Of course, it is still a toy, and will not go through extreme situations. However, it will definitely handle anything your kid throws its way.

4) Parental Control

One of the best features we had to notice is that you, as a parent, can control the maximum speed. After all, you want to make sure that your child is as safe as it can be. And, if your little one is still a beginner, you will not want him/her speeding around.

The Power Wheels Dune Racer comes with two settings. One for beginner drivers, and the other for those with more experience. The beginner setting will only allow it to go up to 2.5 miles per hour. Which is essentially walking speed for an adult. The advanced settings, however, will let your kid move at up to double that speed.

With these controls, you can make sure the toy remains exciting for your child for that much longer. The car can also go backwards which is something kids really love doing.

5) Brake Safety

Their Power-Lock design is there to make sure there are no unnecessary risks for your child. And it is a feature you will be really glad to know exists when you unlock the maximum speed. It will automatically bring the car to a safe stop if the foot leaves the pedal.

Remember, once your child starts conquering hills, he or she might start moving a bit too fast. Especially downhill. And, in those situations, you want to be sure the car can stop safely. The brake system in this kid's electric car is top-notch. Not only will it bring the car to a stop quickly, it will keep the driver in control.

Not to mention that, once your kid masters it, the breaks can be used for certain tricks. And, since the vehicle is so low, they would be able to pull them off very safely.

6) Comfort and Limits

This electric car for kids is a lot more comfortable than you would expect. After all, it looks so rugged and it is obviously made for off-roading. However, the bucket seats offer quite a bit of comfort that is further improved by the suspension system.

It is also more than roomy enough to comfortably seat two kids. And it can support 130 pounds of weight. So you don't have to worry about your kid passing the weight limit before outgrowing this toy.

And lastly, the rechargeable 12V battery should be more than enough for you child to have a lot of fun before it needs a recharge. You might also be interested to look at ride on firetrucks if your child is more interested to be a firefighter.

PROS

  • Great for off-road driving
  • Parental control over the speed
  • Great braking system
  • Sturdy and durable
  • Impressive passive safety

CONS

  • Not for asphalt terrain

F2B Rating

To sum it up, we rate this electric car 4.5 stars out of 5. One of the popular features that we appreciate the most is the fact that you can set the maximum speed. So, if your kid is only 3, it won't be able to ride away faster than our walking speed.

We also love the safety features on this car. This includes the braking system, the steel frame, and even the seat belts that are there to help you not to worry.
