Even the hoverboards we have right now feel very futuristic. Thankfully, they are a part of mainstream tech which means we can all have one. So, if your kid is asking you to get one, you should at least consider it by checking our list out. After all, we have made a list of the 8 best hoverboards out there. All that is left for you is to choose the one that fits your needs.

How to Choose the Best Hoverboard for Kids

The Controversy - To start off we would like to mention the safety controversy. You want to make sure the hoverboard you are buying is as safe as it can be. And, if you were paying attention to the news, some of them are not.

In fact, there were incidents where faulty batteries were the cause of spontaneous fires. And that is not something you wish to happen to you. So, make sure that any hoverboard you buy has UL certification. This is why, on our list, you will not find any hoverboards without this certification.

1) The age requirement - The official age requirement for most hoverboards is 8. However, it mostly depends on how dexterous your kid is. We have seen 6-year olds doing magnificently, and full-on adults failing. So, it is more about the skill of the user than the age. Still, don't let your 5-year old zip around on it just like that. They can still hit decent speeds and you want to avoid injuries.

2) Build quality - Well, this is something you should check with every purchase. However, with hoverboards, it can be trickier. There are a lot of different models and counterfeits out there, so make sure your retailer is trustworthy. It is also a good idea to check out multiple customer comments.

3) The batteries - For a hoverboard, the battery is pretty much the most important aspect. You want to be able to ride for a while, after all. Also, make sure to check out charge times as they can be a real buzz-kill.

4) The weight - Hoverboards do not really hover above the ground. In fact, you will have to carry it around to playdates. And, even if you do not go anywhere far, there are certain steeper inclines the hoverboard can't handle.

5) The price - When it comes to hoverboards prices vary, greatly. So, you should consider how much money you are willing to spend on one. However, make sure that you trust the retailer, no matter how much money you choose to spend. If you are looking for affordable models, check out this review.

8 Top Hoverboard for Kids on the Market

Hover-1 Ultra Hoverboard

World's Smartest Self-Balancing Electric Scooter

While most hoverboards will look alike, there are always differences you can notice. And, as far as this one goes, we are definitely happy with the results. It has the directional LED lights that really go well with the design. Of course, they are a useful feature for safety reasons.

The Hover-1 ultra comes in multiple colors. Our favorite version is the black one. It just makes it look so cool and high-tech. Not to mention that the LED lights go perfectly with the black color scheme. The LED battery indicator is also quite handy if your kid goes out for a longer ride.

Now, an important thing when it comes to safety is the self-balancing feature. And Hover-1 ultra is one of the best when it comes to that. Its EverBalance system is set up to make it easier for beginners to start riding. Essentially, this hoverboard will self-balance even when there is no weight on it. As soon as you press the power button, it will self-balance.

Based on our test and research, this hoverboard is very durable and best suited for beginners to intermediate riders. In fact, the weight limit on this hoverboard is 220 pounds. So, it will definitely accommodate your kid riding on it. It definitely feels solid. We also like the fact that the plastic construction is shatter-resistant. There are also additional silicone reinforcements to protect the board.

This scooter can easily cruise at 7 mph for up to an hour. It will easily go uphill to a certain degree. However, to tackle serious slopes (over 30%) some experience is necessary. The maximum range you can expect out of the battery is about 8 miles.

PROS

  • Great self-balancing
  • Easy to carry around
  • Durable

CONS

  • None.

Hover-1 H1 Hoverboard

Best Body-Control Hoverboard

This hoverboard comes seriously packed. It boasts headlights (LED of course), indicators to show the battery charge, rubber bumpers and, a feature we really like, two riding modes, so even beginners can easily ride on this hoverboard.

The hard ABS casing, aluminum wheels, and hard rubber tires make it a safe ride. Depending on the terrain, the 400-watt motor can make this hoverboard go up to 9 miles per hour and only needs 2.5 hours to be fully charged.

If you purchase this product, and live in the US or Canada you will receive a 90-day warranty. It covers the original buyer in cases of defects regarding materials or workmanship.

The practice mode is very useful. Even a true novice, who has never been on a hoverboard can get a handle in a matter of minutes.

All in all, a pretty good gift for a child who likes a bit of adventure. Even if he/she doesn't have a lot of experience riding on similar devices.

PROS

  • Inertia dynamic stabilization system
  • Fast charging time
  • Eye-catching finish

CONS

  • Sensitive controls

If there is one thing Tomoloo takes to the next level it is the design. This hands-free electric scooter looks and feels incredible. Remember, some of the features might seem juvenile to us, but that is exactly what a kid would want. Tomoloo is already famous for its RGB lights which let you customize the look of your hoverboard.

The same Bluetooth connectivity will also let them blast music from the speakers on this thing. And, while the sound quality is not perfect, the kids really love that as a feature. But, back to design for now. The front lights are both located in front of the feet and on the mudguards. This really gives it a sci-fi feel.

This hoverboard is suitable for kids over the age of 6. Of course, it also depends on the skill of the child. If they are showing a lot of promise, you can start them up earlier, and vice versa.

This self-balancing scooter is made out of high-quality plastic. And it can actually hold up to 165 pounds. Which is a lot more than it will ever have to handle. During our tests, it did quite well even when it met with accidents. The led lights on the fenders are very durable and can handle most of what your kid can throw their way. However, they are far from indestructible, so some caution is not a bad idea.

The fact that the tires are high-quality rubber helps a lot, both in terms of driving and longevity. They handle themselves quite well on rougher asphalt as well as off the road.

Well, it is time to talk about the motors and the battery. The dual motors are both 300-watt silent motors and can be used for over over 2 hours without stopping.

PROS

  • Agile rotation + thickened tires
  • Great design
  • Bluetooth speakers

CONS

  • Lesser weight limit

SAGAPLAY F1 Hoverboard

Lightest Hoverboard on the Market

This heavy-duty looking hoverboard is a great choice for any a child. In fact, it is one of the rare self-balancing scooters specifically made for children and teens. The usual problem with kid versions of the products is the quality. However, SagaPlay F1 is a premium board with all the features you would expect from an adult one.

It looks great. The designers did well to incorporate the features into the design seamlessly. So, the rubber that is there to protect the hoverboard just makes it look even better. It also comes with LED lights so that the rider remains visible in lower-visibility conditions.

One of the things that the company likes to boast about is the safety testing. This model has gone through 159 tests to make sure it is up to safety standards. And it definitely earns the highest ratings possible.

Even though it is for kids, this board can easily handle a 220 pound person riding on it. Of course, that would mean that it is unlikely for it to reach the speed of 10 mph. Which it usually does. However, even with that kind of durability, it is still smaller than most other boards. Making it even better for the youngsters. Another thing to notice is the non-slip rubber on the motion sensitive footpads.

The dual 250W motors offer enough power to move uphill. And the battery charge will last you about an hour. However, there are reports of people getting up to 14 miles of range with this board. Another great thing is that the battery will recharge in 2 hours.

The rubbers are solid and very durable. So, you shouldn't have to worry about them. However, that also means that the driver will feel every twig the board rides over.

PROS

  • Affordable price
  • Specifically made with kid riders in mind
  • Recharges in 2 hours

CONS

  • Struggles with difficult terrain
  • Tricky to master

Segway miniPRO

Anti-Theft Feature

Could we really even make a top list of self-balancing scooters without mentioning Segway. And with the MiniPRO they definitely came through. It is, simply put, one of the best self-balancing scooters out there. And, while it is not technically a hoverboard, we feel it deserves its place on this list. After all, none of the entries really hover, they are all just hands-free scooters.

You can't go wrong with the classic Segway design. And the miniPRO does not disappoint. It looks exactly as you would expect a Segway model to. It also comes with head and tail lights to make sure it remains visible. Of course, they did not just slap a couple of LED lights on it. Actually, they are included in the design of the scooter quite naturally. And, with the phone app, you can adjust the lights yourself.

The simple design is what makes this model attractive. However, it is not only about the looks. The design is actually very functional. You steer by using the knee control bar. It allows for easier maneuvering without having to worry about weight distribution. In fact, even after riding around for a while, it is not uncommon to make a mistake on a hoverboard. However, with the steering rod, that issue is no longer there.

The fact that Segway gave this scooter large wheels also means that you can ride over obstacles. Of course, not all obstacles, however, you should not have issues with sidewalk bumps.

When it comes to safety, Segway will never fail. However, this self-balancing scooter is meant for a bit older of an audience. If your kid is younger than 12, you should probably not allow them to ride without supervision. After all, this Segway can go up to 10 miles per hour.

The Segway MiniPRO also comes with a rider tutorial. And, we love this feature. It is a 5-minute guide on how to ride on this thing. And, during the tutorial, the maximum speed is 4.3 mph. And, even when your kid is done with the tutorial, there is still a speed limit. Namely, the top speed is 6.2 mph until you manually increase it. The app even lets you set up an alarm in cases of theft.

By using the app, you can activate an alarm that goes off if anyone tries to steal the unit. And, if you are close by, you will receive a phone notification about the alarm.

There is even an option to drive it around remotely when nobody is riding. This comes in handy during transportation of the unit.

The frame of the MiniPRO is made out of aircraft-grade materials. It is lightweight and very strong. This electric scooter can handle 225 pounds of weight on it.

The wheels are another thing to love about this Segway-hoverboard hybrid. The 10-inch wheels make sure that it can handle relatively difficult terrain. Even deep gravel was not an issue.

And, in conjunction with these wheels, you still have a very powerful motor. It is a dual motor working with 800-watts, and will easily handle 10 mph. In fact, if there were no factory limiters, it would be able to ride much faster. This means that this hoverboard hybrid can easily conquer most inclines.

In fact, even on a reasonably sharp incline, the Segway MiniPRO keeps a consistent speed. It even drove us over cobblestones. However, that was not a pleasant experience. After all, the ride was very bumpy.

On a single charge, you can probably get around 15 miles of range. Which is definitely something to consider.

PROS

  • High-quality materials
  • Powerful motors
  • Great phone app

CONS

  • Not suitable for smaller children due to the height of the bar
  • You have to keep track of the tire pressure

Halo Rover Hoverboard

Best All-Terrain Hoverboard

Do you want to get a serious, off-road hoverboard for your child? In that case, the Halo Rover might be the single best option for you. This board is essentially an all-terrain board, and it is loads of fun.

Let us start with the design. We know it is not the most important factor, but it is the first thing that you notice. This board looks, and feels, like a heavy duty vehicle. Every detail reminds us of that purpose. The large, non-flat tires, the serious-looking fenders, the metal body and even the lights. It all looks so rugged. Even the carrying case for this board looks good. And it comes for free with your purchase.

The main material is high-grade aluminum which provides a lot more durability than regular plastic. Even the wheel guards are aluminum. Other than that, the company uses high-quality plastic for the casing. Thanks to the 8.5-inch wheels and powerful motors, you can conquer inclines of 20 degrees.

One of the things that this scooter boasts that is rare in the world of hoverboards is water resistance. If you have ever accidentally gone through a puddle, you know it can downright kill your board. However, with the IPX4 certification, this best hoverboard for kids can even go through snow.

This board also comes with Bluetooth speakers to let you play music while riding. However, the sound is really good. With most hoverboards, the sound is never this good.

And, of course, there is a mobile app that features 3 modes, depending on your skill. And, as we already know, training modes are really important. Not only are they useful for novices, but you should go through them every time you switch boards.

PROS

  • Heavy duty board you can take off the road
  • Good speakers
  • 3 skill modes

CONS

  • It is rather heavy

Do the stories of hoverboards bursting into flames still scare you? Well, the UL 2272 certification should put your mind at ease. However, if it does not, the Swagtron T1 is the perfect choice for you. Not only did it pass the tests, it also has additional layers of protection. Not only is the outer cover fire proof, but it also has a shield feature around the battery itself.

The Sentry Shield battery is a patented system for lithium-ion batteries. It monitors and keeps your batteries safe. And, you should know that one of the tests it went through was a 10-ton crush test. So you can be sure that you won't accidentally break the shield.

The design is classic, but with a really good execution. The shiny finish makes it pop out and the LED lights complement it perfectly.

It also offers a learning mode so that you can make sure your kid can master the board before going out. Outside of that mode, the 300-watt motor will allow it to go up to 8 mph. And it will provide your kid a 12-mile range. We should also note that the charge time is very impressive. It takes only about an hour to recharge fully.

One thing that we especially like is the safe stop technology. Since kids are not famous for being responsible the safe stop will do it for them. If you try to push the battery too far and end up dry, the hoverboard will not just stop. It will slow down and maintain the balance until you can get off the board.

PROS

  • Great charge time
  • Sentry Shield technology
  • Safe Stop feature

CONS

  • The fireproof plastic parts are a bit less durable

EPIKGO Self Balancing Scooter Hoverboard

Designed for Slope Climbing

We simply had to include this board on our list. It is another all-terrain best hoverboard for kids with impressive features.

As far as design goes, it is essentially a monster truck of a hoverboard. It is 30% bigger than classic boards and incredibly powerful. And the design screams it. Much like the Halo Rover, it gives off the vibe of being capable of doing anything.

The 8.5-inch tires make it perfect for off-roading. You can easily take this hoverboard through sand or rough pavement. However, if you really want to test out the capabilities of this board, you have to take it off-road. It does sacrifice a bit of maneuverability due to its size, however, it pays off.

The moment it hits the rough terrain you can feel the difference. The wheels will handle anything your kid throws at this hoverboard. It can go through long, uncut grass, and even puddles.

And, you should bear in mind that the rough terrain capabilities have more uses than you would expect. For an example, an average hoverboard is not a perfect choice for going to school. A single bump in the road can throw your kid off the board. However, with this model, you can rest assured that it will handle this. The dual 400-watt motor allows it to move at 10 miles per hour and the 4.4AH battery can keep it going for a while. In fact, some tests show that it lasts well over two hours.

PROS

  • Perfect for off-roading
  • Can climb steep slopes
  • Great for actual commuting

CONS

  • Less agility
  • Lacks Bluetooth connectivity
